Katatonia, Novembers Doom, lots of bands, it's kind of a dark gloomy metal.

That's totally not true! Katatonia are miserable and sorrowful, but they don't whine about their girlfriends dumping them and throwing their bleeding hearts into blenders and stuff. Doom is more about the gloomy side of life I guess.

Doom is pretty much sabbath taken to it's logical dark extreme. It's about darkness and sorrow in almost fantasy proportion in most cases.

It's definately about the darker side of life. But not so much whining as recognising it. It says "life is shit" but not "life is shit, pity me". Whereas emo is "life isn't shit. But pity me anyway". "oh and send me money and much sexing up". I'm sorry if you think emo is somehow genuine or real.

Doom varies from dark groovy sabbath like stuff like candlemass to abrasive and harsh stuff like unearthly trance and the nasty as hell iron monkey.

Black Sabbath are an example of traditional Doom metal: fairly chunky riffs, usually medium paced but repeated quite a lot. Lyrics are often miserable but can be powerful in a soulful way. Other examples include Candlemass or Reverend Bizarre.

Then, more modern developments have included Funeral Doom, basically an extremely slow form of music, some think as a reaction to the increasing speed and virtuosity of genres like power or speed metal. Bands like Shape of Despair or perhaps Fantomas (?)

And of course Death/Doom has to be counted. Katatonia, Aphotic or Agalloch. The name makes the meaning obvious.

Yes, because any music portraying negative emotions is emo. And here I was thinking it was the style of music which made music emo, silly me.

On a related side note, anyone know what Acid Bath is technically classified as? Sludge or Doom? Not that it matters, they've prompted me to expand beyond power and heavy metal.

I think they're like a sludgey doomy combo haha. Incidentally, I don't suppose you're a fan of Old Man Gloom?

Haven't heard any of their stuff. Or of them, for that matter.

To piracy!

Edit: Wow, with a name like that I was expecting good music. The intro to one of the songs made me go, "Wow, this is pretty good." Then the vocalist made me cry. Heh.

emo and doom could not be farther apart in my opinion...

emo is depressive state of emotional music derived from direct interaction with another human (i.e. girlfriends, love interests, etc..) since the emotions are flakey and only surface deep the music suffers

Doom metal is a dark, heavy and powerful expression of emotion derived from interaction with ones environment. Life paths also called into question within doom metal, many of the songs deal with the proposed or "impending doom" which will ultimately come as a result of continuance. The emotions are developed over a much larger time frame and as a result the songs tend to be much more developed and have multiple stages of developement within each song.

One of my favorite approaches to doom metal is DOOMSWORD who takes a historical approach to the genre. In their songs they empathetically put themselves is the shoes of people in places where doom-ful events took place and they talk about "impending doom" as it may have looked from those peoples' perspectives.
